President of the State Audit Institution (SAI) and Auditor General, Dr. Duško Pejović, presented the role of SAI in supervision over public finances at the Forum "Open on Corruption: Towards more Transparent and Accountable Public Finances", held in the Faculty of Economics in Subotica.
In addition to Dr. Pejović, students and interested citizens of Subotica had the opportunity to speak to Prof. Dr. Miroslav Prokopijević from the Institute of European Studies and Mr. Dragan Dobrašinović, Chairman of the Coalition for Public Oversight over Public Finances.
The Forum saw the discussion on economic price of corruption, as well as on citizens' participation in fight against corruption.
Dr. Pejović highlighted that in future SAI will deal more with issues affecting citizens directly, through performance audits, including topics involving prices of communal services, electricity, kindergarten institutions.
According to Miroslav Prokopijević, corruption inherently brings about two problems, which are ethical-legal and economic, affecting the quality of life of citizens and standard of living in a country.
Dragan Dobrašinović reminded of the fact that the government belonged to the citizens, and of important links in accountability chain in fight against corruption.
After the speeches delivered by the speakers, citizens and students also participated in the discussion. Some of the topics involved in the discussion were state auditors' report regarding the City of Subotica, failed privatizations and inability to impose accountability in that area, judicial reform, relation between lobbying and corruption.
Event was organized by the Student Parliament of the Faculty of Economics in Subotica and Bečej Association of the Young.
